I have cruised over Christmas, and I have to tell you — I love it.
I've spent the holidays onboard Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Virgin Voyages, and Disney, and while each cruise line handles the season a little differently, they all have one big thing in common:
Christmas at sea is fun, festive, and surprisingly easy.
And sometimes, easy is exactly what you need during the holidays.
The ships really do feel like Christmas
As December arrives, the ships start to transform.
Trees. Garlands. Lights. Massive gingerbread displays. Holiday music. Special treats.
It’s those little touches throughout the ship that make you realize you're not just on a standard vacation — you are truly celebrating Christmas (and New Year's) at sea.
Usually, holiday activities happen all day long: ornament making, gingerbread decorating, holiday crafts, festive shows, and special events for the kids.
Some ships go bigger with their decor than others—some are beautifully traditional, while others take a more modern approach. But they all bring their own version of holiday spirit. And I love that.
You still get to keep your traditions
One of the biggest questions people ask me is whether Christmas onboard will actually feel like Christmas.
For me, it absolutely does.
You can dress up for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. You can take family photos in front of giant trees. You can exchange gifts, enjoy a special holiday meal, and watch a Christmas show together. You get to keep the traditions that matter most to your family while building brand-new ones.
And if you really want to bring a little piece of home with you? I've seen plenty of travelers bring small decorations for their cabin doors or staterooms.
Why not? Christmas doesn't have to look identical every year to still feel magical.
You don't have to do any of the work
This might be my absolute favorite part.
You don't have to cook Christmas dinner. You don't have to scrub the house beforehand or clean up after guests. You don't have to figure out how to keep everyone entertained all day long.
You unpack once. Your ship carries you somewhere warm and beautiful. There is delicious food everywhere, activities for the kids, entertainment for the adults, and plenty of quiet corners when you just want a moment to relax.
Depending on your itinerary, Christmas Day might be a sun-drenched sea day or you might wake up in a new port. I've experienced both, and honestly, both are wonderful in their own way.
That’s the beauty of cruising: you get to create your own version of the holiday.
It’s unbeatable for families
This is where holiday cruising truly shines. Everyone gets to enjoy their own idea of a vacation without drifting apart.
The kids can dive into festive activities and make new friends at the clubs. Adults can enjoy a quiet dinner, hit the spa, or relax on deck. Then, everyone comes back together in the evening for dinner or a show.
There is something so special about looking around the table on Christmas Day and realizing that instead of stressing over a long to-do list, you're simply enjoying being together. Those are the moments that stick with you.
Would I cruise over Christmas again?
In a heartbeat.
For me, cruising over the holidays isn't about replacing Christmas—it's about creating a different kind of Christmas memory.
Maybe your family wants sunshine and beaches in the Caribbean. Maybe you want to explore historic ports in Europe. Or maybe you just want the kids to wake up on Christmas morning somewhere entirely new.
If you've ever thought, "I would love to spend Christmas somewhere special, but I don't want all the work that comes with it," this is worth considering.
You still get the lights. You still get the music. You still get the family time. You still get Christmas.
You just don't have to cook it.

If a Christmas cruise sounds like something your family would love, don't wait until fall to start looking.
Holiday sailings fill up fast—especially if you need connecting rooms, a specific suite setup, or a popular family cabin category. The earlier you start planning, the more choices you'll have.
And that matters to me. I never want my clients to just settle for any Christmas cruise; I want to help them find the exact ship, itinerary, and cabin that fits how their family likes to travel.
