Italy Vacations, Planned by a No-Fee Travel Agent

Stacey Vacations plans Italy at no fee — city stays in Rome, Florence and Venice, the Amalfi Coast and Capri, Tuscany's hill towns and wine country, the Italian Lakes, and Mediterranean cruises that call at Italy's great ports. I'm Stacey Haines, a Florida-based travel agent with Castle Dreams Travel, and the suppliers pay my commission, so the planning costs you nothing extra.

Italy is a country that rewards a planner. The sights everyone comes for — the Colosseum, the Vatican Museums, Florence's Uffizi and Michelangelo's David — all run on timed-entry tickets that sell out weeks ahead, the fast trains between cities beat driving, and Italy's historic-center driving zones (the ZTL) quietly fine unprepared tourists. Picking the right two or three bases, in the right order, is the difference between a relaxed trip and a blur.

I plan Italy for travelers nationwide, and honeymoons are my specialty — few places do a honeymoon like the Amalfi Coast. Below is a short, honest tour of the Italy I book most. Build a shortlist, and I'll turn it into an itinerary.

  • The Colosseum in Rome, Italy

    Rome

The Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel — Rome layers two thousand years of history over espresso bars and trattorias. Give it at least three days, toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain, and let me handle the timed Vatican and Colosseum tickets so you skip the lines.

  • Florence Cathedral's dome rising over the Tuscan city

    Florence & Tuscany

Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance: Brunelleschi's dome, the Uffizi, and Michelangelo's David all sit within a twenty-minute walk of each other, and the timed museum tickets are my job. Beyond the city, Tuscany is the Italy of the postcards — Siena and San Gimignano, the vineyards of Chianti, and long lunches that run into the afternoon. It's the easiest region in the country to pair a city with a slower countryside stay.

  • Gondolas on a canal in Venice, Italy

    Venice

A city built on water: the Grand Canal, St. Mark's Square, the Rialto Bridge, and quiet back canals best seen from a gondola — and emptiest, most beautifully, at the edges of the day. Venice is also a classic embarkation port for a Mediterranean or Adriatic cruise, so it pairs naturally with time at sea.

  • Pastel houses cascading down cliffs on the Amalfi Coast

    The Amalfi Coast & Capri

Positano's pastel houses stacked above the sea, garden concerts in clifftop Ravello, lemon groves that end up in your limoncello, and the island of Capri a short boat ride offshore. The coast road itself is half the experience — and it's the honeymoon stretch of Italy, which is exactly why couples put it at the center of the trip.

  • The Italian Lakes

Lake Como's villa gardens and mountain backdrop, Lake Maggiore's island palaces, and Lake Garda on the edge of the Dolomites — the Lakes are where Italians themselves go to slow down. An easy, elegant add-on to Milan or a Switzerland itinerary.

  • Should You See Italy by Land, by Cruise, or Both?

You can do Italy entirely on land, entirely by sea, or — as many of my clients do — both. The major lines' Mediterranean itineraries call at Rome (Civitavecchia), Naples for the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii, Florence and Pisa (Livorno), and Venice, so a cruise is a genuine way to sample the country before you choose where to return. I book those sailings on the same lines I sail myself, and I'll tell you honestly which ports are worth a full day and which are better as an overnight on land.

  • How to Build Your Italy Trip

Pick two or three regions, not the whole boot — Rome and the Amalfi Coast, or Florence, Tuscany and Venice, make far better weeks than a city a day. Tell me your must-sees and your dates, and I'll sequence the cities, book the fast trains and the timed museum tickets, and find the hotels in the neighborhoods you actually want to be in. Honeymoons and multigenerational trips are a specialty, a Mediterranean cruise is always an option, and the planning is free.
