Christmas Market River Cruises — Planned Free
A Christmas market river cruise sails the Danube or the Rhine between late November and Christmas, docking in the middle of towns whose squares have turned into markets: wooden stalls, handmade decorations, warm drinks and lights after dark. I've sailed the Danube in December myself, and it isn't simply a summer river cruise with colder weather. It has its own personality: the quiet scenery along the river, a historic town with cold air on your face, the glow of a Christmas market after dark, and then coming back to the ship, taking off your coat and settling in by the windows while the river carries you to the next stop.
When Are the Christmas Markets Open?
Most of Europe's Christmas markets open in late November and close around December 23 or 24, and the cruise season follows them: departures run from late November to just before Christmas.
Dates vary by city. In 2026, Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt, one of the oldest and most famous Christmas markets in the world, runs November 27 to December 24. Vienna starts earlier, with most of its markets open from mid-November and the big ones running to at least December 23.
An early sailing and a mid-December sailing can both be the right choice. The thing to check is that the markets on your route are open on the days your ship is in port, and that is exactly the kind of detail I look at before recommending a departure.
The Danube: Nuremberg to Budapest
The classic Danube Christmas route runs between Nuremberg and Budapest, sailed in either direction: Nuremberg, Regensburg, Passau or Linz, Melk and the Wachau Valley, Vienna, and Budapest.
This is the river I know in December. Melk Abbey is impressive any time of year, but in December the setting can take on a peaceful, almost storybook style, with the yellow walls of the Abbey standing out against the winter sky. Vienna is beautiful any time of year too, and there is something special about seeing it during the Christmas season: the lights, the decorated streets, the markets and the seasonal food feel both elegant and festive. It is one of those places where I think you should give yourself permission to slow down.
Budapest makes a spectacular finish. The Parliament and the bridges are lit along the river at night, and seeing them from the ship after dark is one of the great sights of the trip.
The Rhine: Basel to Amsterdam
On the Rhine, Christmas sailings typically run between Basel and Amsterdam, with Strasbourg and Cologne as the headline markets. Some itineraries sail the shorter stretch between Basel and Cologne.
The Rhine is the France-and-Germany version of the season, with Strasbourg in Alsace and Cologne's markets gathered around its cathedral. If you are torn between the two rivers, that is exactly the conversation to have with me, because the right answer depends on the towns you want to see and the ship you want to be on.
Choosing the Right Ship
A river cruise is not a one-size-fits-all experience. The cruise line, ship layout and service style vary dramatically, even when two ships visit the exact same towns. Most sail their Christmas routes in both directions, and names and routes can change from year to year, so I always check the current season before recommending one. Prices move too, which is why you won't see them here.
Viking: Christmas on the Rhine and the Danube
Viking's two signature holiday sailings are Christmas on the Rhine, eight days between Amsterdam and Basel, and Christmas on the Danube, eight days between Budapest and Regensburg by way of Vienna, the Wachau Valley, Göttweig Abbey near Krems, and Passau. For a longer trip, Christmas on the Rhine & Main runs eleven days from Nuremberg to Basel.

On the Rhine, Christmastime in Alsace & Germany is a five-day sailing from Frankfurt to Basel with Heidelberg, whose market spreads across five town squares, Strasbourg and Breisach, and Festive Time on the Romantic Rhine runs eight days between Amsterdam and Basel.
Avalon's Panorama Suites face the bed toward a wall of floor-to-ceiling glass, which is a wonderful way to watch a winter river go by.
Scenic: All-Inclusive Christmas Markets
Scenic's holiday program includes Rhine Christmas Markets, eight days from Zurich to Amsterdam, and Danube Christmas Markets, eight days from Munich to Budapest, plus two fifteen-day voyages from Amsterdam to Budapest, one of them spending Christmas Day on board and seeing in the New Year in a European city.
Scenic fares bundle drinks, tips, excursions and transfers, so very little is left to settle at the end. If you would rather not think about the bill once you are aboard, this is the line to look at.
Emerald Cruises: Christmas on the Danube and the Rhine
Emerald's holiday sailings include Christmas Markets on the Rhine, eight days from Zurich to Amsterdam, a short five-day Christmas Time on the Danube from Budapest to Vienna, the seven-day Christmas Time on the Danube & Budapest from Vienna to Budapest, and the fifteen-day Christmas Markets of Europe from Budapest to Amsterdam.

Riverside's Christmas sailings are on the Rhine. Festive Cheer From Basel to Dusseldorf is a seven-day voyage aboard the Riverside Debussy with Strasbourg, Mannheim, Frankfurt, Rüdesheim, Koblenz, Bonn and Cologne, and shorter four-day sailings such as Fairytale Christmas on the Rhine suit travelers with less time.
This is the top of the river market, with all-suite accommodation and marble everywhere, for travelers who already know they want the most space and service a river ship can offer.
Amadeus: The Magic of Advent
Amadeus calls its holiday program the Magic of Advent. Magic of Advent on the Danube sails seven days between Nuremberg and Vienna, and Magic of Advent on the Rhine is a five-day sailing between Cologne and Strasbourg with the markets of Heidelberg. There are also seven-day Christmas Cruises that round-trip from Passau on the Danube, with the Salzburg Christmas market, and from Cologne on the Rhine, with a Christmas party on board.
Amadeus tends to price more gently than the top-tier luxury lines while still feeling considered rather than budget. If the Danube is your river and value matters, it belongs on your shortlist.
Viva Cruises: All-Inclusive Advent Cruises
Viva sails Christmas market cruises on the Rhine, the Moselle, the Danube and the Rhône, and every one comes with its all-inclusive package: full board, drinks throughout the day and a mini bar restocked in your cabin. Its program leans toward shorter sailings, such as the Christmas Market Spree on the Rhine, and it also runs a Christmas voyage on the Elbe and Vltava from Berlin to Prague with Christmas Eve celebrated on board.
Those shorter sailings make Viva one of the easier ways to try a Christmas market cruise without committing to a full week.
When to Book a Christmas Market Cruise
June is not too early. European Christmas market cruises are exceptionally popular, and the most desirable departures and cabin categories often fill up well before winter arrives.
I've had clients call me in October wanting to sail that December. Could we find a cruise? Yes. But by then the question is rarely which cruise line, ship and itinerary you would prefer. It becomes which of the remaining open cabins work for you. Starting early gives us time to compare lines, study the cabin maps and line up your flights before the choices narrow.
What to Pack
Winter weather on the rivers in late November and December can range from a crisp 50°F down to freezing wet rain or snow, and you'll move constantly between chilly market squares, heated shops and a warm ship. The answer is layers, not one bulky coat: a thin thermal base, a sweater or fleece you can pull off indoors, and a windproof, water-resistant outer coat.
Your feet matter most. You'll walk on cold cobblestones for hours, so bring waterproof, insulated boots that are broken in, plus warm socks. And keep a few euros handy: when you buy mulled wine at a market you pay a small deposit for the festive mug, called a Pfand and usually €3 to €5. Return it for your money back, or keep it. Each city creates its own design every year, and I have a feeling I'm not the only one who comes home with more Christmas mugs than I planned to buy.
